Fall, 2011 Hunter Safety Education Class

Our fall hunter safety education class ran from August  26 to September 10; classroom sessions were held at Cowley Hall on the UWL campus and the test was conducted at the La Crosse Rifle Club.  A total of 70 students enrolled in the class.  Of the 70 students, 67 passed the class and were certified (three failed the written test).  The test consisted of a field test that included live fire of .22 rifles and 20 Ga shotguns as well as a written test of 40 questions; students are required to display safe handling of firears at all times during the test.  A .22LR Marlin bolt action rifle with camoflage stock was donated by the local chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and was given away by drawing after the test; it was won by a 12 year old boy who successfully completed the class.  A Ruger 10/22 rifle was also given away by drawing and was won by an 11 year old girl who successfully completed hunter safety.  Transfer of the rifles was handled by Wiebke Fur Co. of La Crosse.  Many thanks to the membership of the La Crosse Rifle Club for their ongoing support of this program.
